Martha Sue Wood, 78, of Hartford, AL, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at her home. Martha Sue was born and raised in Hartford. She was the daughter of Marvin Franklin Wood and Exie Adkinson Wood.
After graduating from high school in Hartford, Martha Sue attended and graduated from Auburn University. She taught physical education in Danville, Virginia, and at LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia. From 1962 to 1980, Martha Sue taught physical education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In 1980, she moved back to Hartford to care for her parents. For several years Martha Sue owned, along with her sister, and operated The Fashion Shop in Hartford. After her parents passed away, Martha Sue returned to teaching physical education in Geneva County Elementary Schools. After retirement, she played golf and travelled with friends.
Martha Sue loved and was actively involved with her family, church, and community. She preceded in death by her parents, her brother-in-law, Albert Rivenbark and her great nephew, Albert Bettis.
Survivors include her sister, Laurjean Rivenbark; niece, Laura Cowart (James); nephew, William Rivenbark (Cathy); nephew, Marvin Rivenbark (Laura); niece, Margaret Hendrix (Rodney); several great nieces and nephews, who affectionately called her “Granny Sue”, Quintin Bettis (Melissa), Keltin, Trey and Grant Bettis, Ashley Ramsey (Peter), Stewart, Spencer and Sawyer Rivenbark, Jenny (Al) Gilmore. She is also survived by her aunt, Dell Wood Sumblin and several cousins.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday morning, July 29, 2014, at 10:00 at Hartford City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be William Rivenbark, Marvin Rivenbark, Quintin Bettis, Stewart Rivenbark, Spencer Rivenbark, and Peter Ramsey. Honorary pallbearers will be Barbara Howell, Judy Rousseau, Gracie Thomas, Robert and Kathryn Byrd, Gene and Donna Brannon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mustard Seeds at First United Methodist Church of Hartford, Alabama.
