Mary Alice Bond Burdette, of Dothan, went to sleep in death, Thursday afternoon, December 20, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was 89.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Brannon Stand Road with Tom Littleton officiating. The family will receive friends following the services at the family residence (229 Bethlehem Road) where Mary resided for over 50 years.
Mary was born in Elba, Alabama on June 28, 1929 to Lena and Ernest Nelson and lived the early years of her life in Newton, Alabama. After her marriage to Otis Bond, she moved to Dothan where she resided the remainder of her life. As a young woman, she worked in the sewing factory in Newton. She also worked with Borden’s Ice Cream Company where she was selected to be the Borden’s “Dutch Girl” to promote the new dutch chocolate flavor. Later she was employed with Sunnyland Packing Company prior to her retirement.
Mary was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. She worked hard all of her life and lovingly cared for her family. She was loved and highly respected and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Mary was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the Dothan West Congregation.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her two husbands, Otis Bond and Ed Burdette; two sisters, Patricia Edmondson and Opal Clark; and a brother, Joe Nelson.
She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Barker (Pat) of Dead Lakes, FL and Carolyn Hinton (James) of Dothan, AL; her sister Patricia’s 3 children that she raised as her own, Cindy Griffin (Marshall), Debbie Leverette and Carl Edmondson, Jr.; grandchildren, James Otis Barker, Bryan Barker, Jimmy Hinton, Cricket Hinton, Randy Hinton, Joshua Griffin, India Cross, April Taylor, Clint Leverette, Candace Sweatt and Trey Edmondson; sixteen great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren, a sister, Imogene “Jean” Bower of Maui, Hawaii.
