Mary Ann Blount passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

Mary had been a registered nurse for 45 years and devoted much of her career to the advancement of the nursing profession. She was a faculty member at the University of Virginia School of Nursing and later served as assistant director of nursing at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She earned a PhD from the Virginia Commonwealth University but gave up her administrative career to move to Dothan in order to become a second mother to her nieces, Jill Gommo and Ally Smith (nee Gommo) and to return to her first love, bedside nursing. Mary was a person of great moral and ethical strength. She was an inspiration to her family and her many friends, and she will be very dearly missed.

Mary is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Mike Spradley of Dothan; her brother, Joe Blount of Alexandria, Virginia; her cousins, Gilbert (Pete) Stewart and Astrid Schmidt-Nielsen of Washington, D.C. and Dr. and Mrs. Richard Jaqua of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and by her “children” Jill Gommo and Ally, Chris, and Jaxon Smith.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends following the services in the Sunset Reception Center.
