Mary Braswell Deese Hickman, age 73, a resident of Ashford, died Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center from complications of M.S.


Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Dothan with Reverend Ray Jones, Reverend Wayne Marshall,  Reverend Tim Willis officiating.  Mrs. Margaret Kennedy will provide the eulogy.  Burial will follow in Ashford City Cemetery with Kendall Glover directing.


The family will be receiving friends on Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church.  Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Southeast Alabama Baptist Ministry Center, 1308 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan, AL. 36301.


Mrs. Hickman was born on January 29, 1945 in Opelika the daughter of Hubert Hilliard Deese and Mary Kathryn Phillips Deese.  Mary was a 1963 graduate of Ashford High School and a 1967 graduate of Troy State University.  She was a PE teacher and cheerleader sponsor at Hardaway High School in Columbus, Georgia, PE teacher at Wilson Street and Southside Elementary schools in Dothan and Ashford Elementary in Ashford.  Mary taught math at Ashford High School and coached girls softball at Ashford and at Wallace College.  Teams at both schools won state championships.  She was a strong advocate for girls athletics both in high school and in Ashford.  As chairman of the City Recreation Board, she added girls softball enabling girls to participate in the city recreation program.  In 2014 she was inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame.  Mary was the 1991 Ashford High School Teacher of the Year.  She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and was actively involved in the recreation program and the Dust Covered Disciples Sunday School Class at Ridgecrest.


Mrs. Hickman is preceded in death by her parents.


Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Bill H. Hickman of Ashford;  two sons, Stephen Hickman (Mary) of Hoover and Bryan Hickman of Ashford; a brother, Hugh Deese of Ashford; a sister, Hildred Deese of Starkville, MS; a sister-in-love, Karen Campbell of Dothan; two grandchildren, Andrew Hickman and John Hickman, both of Hoover; three sisters-in-law, Jeannette Dickinson of Clanton, AL, Faye Ginther (Ken) of Fruitland Park, FL and Tera Hunt (John) of East Palatka, FL; a brother-in-law, Frank Hickman (LaRue) of Ocala, FL.


Active pallbearers will be: Andrew Hickman, John Hickman, Mike Law, Sherill Hicks, Quency McLendon, David Wright, Nathan Wright, Mark Deese and Richard Meadows.


Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Dust Covered Disciples Sunday School Class at Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
