 MARY ELLEN THORNELL


Mary Ellen Thornell’s eternal homecoming was celebrated Sunday morning, March 24, 2013.


Graveside services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Dothan City Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Gross officiating and Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday prior to service time.


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to SARCOA, “Meals on Wheels”, 1075 S. Brannon Stand Road, Dothan, AL, 36305.


Born December 2, 1922, in Houston County, Alabama, she was the daughter of Ashley K. and Pearl O. Tucker. She was married to Pershing Thornell, their marriage blessed with two sons, Michael J. (Kathryn Wesson) and Stanley P. (Nancy Davis) Thornell.


A lifelong resident of the Dothan area, she was a member of the First Baptist Church for over seventy years worshiping with the Martha Jane Sparks Sunday School Class most recently.  A Sears’s employee for thirty-two years, Mary was active with the Retiree Group until failing health intervened.  She was a resident of Westside Terrace for the past two plus years.


She was predeceased by her parents, husband, a brother, Adolph Tucker; two sisters, Evelyn Bryan and Bennie Hendrickson.


She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren: Michael P. (Rachel Dean) St.  Johns, FL; Mark A. (Kristen Hyde) Peachtree Corners, GA; Brett T. (Kelly Tillman) Rogers, AR; and Trent W. (Lesley Mullen) Ft. Payne, AL; Todd P. (Melissa Maddox) Dothan, AL; Chris L. (Lana Sample) Dothan, AL; and Anne Turner (Neal Carroll) Birmingham, AL.  She was further blessed with twenty-one great grandchildren.


Serving as active pallbearers are her grandsons.  Honorary pallbearers are members of the Martha Jane Sparks Sunday School Class and the Sears Retiree Group.
