ABBEVILLE. . .Mary Davis Henderson Strickland, a resident of Abbeville, died late Friday night, February 2, 2024, in a Dothan hospital. She was 90.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, February 4, 2024, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Matthew Quincey and Reverend Winford Gulledge officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Abbeville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries, 2681 Rocky Ridge Lane, Birmingham, AL 35216.
Mrs. Strickland was born and reared in the Wills Crossroads Community of Henry County, daughter of the late Thomas Watson Davis and Frances Gamble Davis. She was a graduate of Abbeville High School and attended Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing where she received a degree as a Registered Nurse. In 1957, she enlisted in the U. S. Air Force Reserve and retired from the Air National Guard of Alabama in 1993 as a Lt. Colonel. Mrs. Strickland also attended the University of Maryland and the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she received advanced nursing degrees. She was awarded a Doctorate of Education from Auburn University in 1987. Mrs. Strickland was retired from Troy University in Montgomery as Assistant Dean of Nursing. She lived in Montgomery most of her adult lifetime before returning to Henry County in 2000 where she was a member of the Old Zion Baptist Church. Mrs. Strickland was preceded in death by her first husband, Shields Henderson, a sister, Doris Davis Livingston, and a brother, Frank Davis.
Surviving relatives include her husband, James B. Strickland, Abbeville; a step-daughter, Shelia Strickland, Abbeville; a step-son, Mike Strickland (Pat), Headland; step-grandchildren, Cindy Bezdek (Jodie), and JonMichael Brady (Jasmine); step-great-grandchildren, Cooper, Adele and Mavis; special nieces, Kathy Burke and Jamie Kay Mathis.
