Mary Jane Emery (Alleman) died peacefully in her home on 9 Feb 2018 in Dothan AL at the age of 91. She is survived by sons David C. Emery and Joseph R. Emery; nephew Richard Alleman (Joyce); niece Vickie Alleman, many nieces and nephews; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Cynthia M. Dodson (Bret) and their children Holden, Fletcher and Blake; Christopher Emery (Caitlyn); Jamie L. Mealor (Thomas) and their children Mary Jane, Macey and Austin; Alexander Emery; and Nicholas Emery. She is preceded in death by her husband Clyde Emery, son Michael L. Emery, and brother Richard A. Alleman.
Mary Jane was born on July 29, 1926 in Casey, Illinois to Sampson and Zelphia Alleman. She graduated from high school in 1944 and later Troy State University with a degree in Education and a Master of Library Sciences. She married childhood sweetheart, Clyde Emery in 1948.
They lived in various locations including CA, TX, OK, AL, Italy, MA, and GA, before settling in Enterprise, Alabama where she taught English at Coppinville High School and Dauphin Junior High. She was the first Caucasian teacher to teach at Coppinville. She later worked as a librarian for Jackson County School System. In 1979, they built a home on Compass Lake in FL and lived there for 20 years before returning to Dothan in 2000. She was active in National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Regent in the Chipola Chapter. She was also an active member of the Hazelwood Book Group.
Special thanks to granddaughter Jamie for the extraordinary care given her for the last several years.
A funeral is scheduled at 12:30 PM on Saturday, 17 Feb 2018 at Sunset Memorial Park in Dothan with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30-12:30 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary Jane's life. Donations in her memory may be made to Houston County Library System.
