Ms. Mary Lavinia Jordan Helms of Enterprise went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 3, 2019. She was 91.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. (CDT) on Monday, July 8, 2019 at Sorrells Funeral Home with Dr. Michael Mynatt officiating. Interment will follow at Meadowlawn Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory of Enterprise directing. The family will receive friends at Sorrells on Sunday, July 7th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. (CDT).
Flowers will be accepted, or donations can be made to the Gen. Edmund Winchester Rucker, Chapter 2534, United Daughters of the Confederacy Scholarship Fund, c/o Pat Richter, 1579 County Road 201, Jack, AL 36346; or to Hillcrest Baptist Church, 500 Alberta St., Enterprise, AL 36330.
Ms. Helms was born March 26, 1928 in Geneva County to the late Mattie Mae Anderson Jordan and William DeVoda Jordan. As an avid historian committed to familial and local genealogical endeavors, she was co-founder of the Gen. Edmund Winchester Rucker Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a member of multiple preservation organizations such as the Pea River Historical Society. Authoring and co-authoring numerous books, she spent countless hours researching public records and exploring cemeteries. A love of quilting led her to co-found the Enterprising Quilters Guild as she hand sewed hundreds of quilts and crafted many heirlooms that continue to be treasured by family. Ms. Helms was employed as a civil servant accountant for many years at Fort Rucker and was a dedicated charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Her husband, James Helms, and daughter, Shirley Helms Edberg, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Marie Helms Koach (Stephen) of Enterprise; her son, Kenneth Helms (Heather) of Fayettville, GA; her brothers, William Jordan of Huntsville, AL; Donald Jordan of Coffee Springs, AL; Bobby Jordan of Milton, FL; her sister, Marjorie Charles of Coffee Springs, AL; 13 grandchildren: Sharon, Thomas, Heather, Kellie, Bethany, Kristin, Havilah, Canaan, Jordan, Shaphan, Josiah, Kerith, and Micaiah; 18 greatgrandchildren: Stephen, Christopher, Jesse, Emily, Zachary, Siegen, Mary Margaret, Tyler, Henry, Davis, Lillian, Easton, Ethan, Anderson, Miriam, Amelia, Silas, Charlotte, Baby Girl Diedrich, and Baby Boy Teel; and 1 great-greatgranddaughter, Lennox.
