Mary M. Welch Tate of Hartford passed away June 16, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 87.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2023 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb with Rev. Johnny Shepard and Rev. David Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
Mary was born to Woody Welch and Lola Moates Welch on May 23, 1936 in Barbour County, Alabama. Her family moved to Hartford, Alabama when she was 10. She continued her education after moving to Hartford at Geneva County Elementary and High Schools. Mary met and married the love of her life, Floyd Tate, in 1953. They went on to have 2 children, Glenn Tate (Kay) and Wanda Tate Williamson (David). Glenn’s children are Dawn Miner, Kent Tate and Kelly Tate. Wanda’s children are Aleshia Ellenburg Walker (Craig) and Stephen Ellenburg (Shelby). She also has 16 great-grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother, granny, Mimi Tig and sister. She worked at various places but was mostly a homemaker. She was a devout Christian and a member of Hartford First Assembly of God Church. When she was able, she enjoyed going to Hartford Senior Citizens. She enjoyed visiting with the people there and doing various activities such as painting. She loved to garden and always had beautiful flowers in her yard. In her younger years she loved to make quilts. She made a quilt for each of her grandchildren and also one for her son and daughter. These were all beautiful and a labor of love from her that will be treasured for generations to come. Mary was a great cook. We all loved her southern cooking, delicious cakes and the best Peanut Brittle ever made. She loved all the babies that were born into the family. She would sit and rock them for hours. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years, Floyd Tate; a sister, Jeanette Hendrix and a brother, Donnell Welch.
Additional survivors are 3 sisters; Thelma Hendrix, Ila Burdette, Glenda Price; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Evelyn Tate, sister-in-law, Bernice Tate; and many nieces, nephews and other family members.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons: Kent Tate, Stephen Ellenburg, Cole Owen, Bailey Owen, Harrison Owen, William Smith, Nathan Walker, Evan Tate, Sawyer Ellenburg, Spencer Ellenburg and Nolan Miner.
A special thank you to all her wonderful caregivers and nurses, who gave devoted care and treatment to Mary.
