Mary (May) Carew of Enterprise, AL began the ultimate journey on October 6, 2012. Mary, or May as she was known to all, is survived by her loving spouse of almost 50 years, David (Dave) and her adoring daughter, Laura Marie Carew Loftus and nephew, John Gillespie Waugh who still resides in Scotland. May and her husband moved to Enterprise in 2007 from Coos Bay, Oregon. When people would ask May why she and Dave came to Alabama, she would say, “Because the people are so warm and friendly and so is the weather”.
May was born in Edinburgh, Scotland as Mary Mailer. She met her husband when he was stationed near Edinburgh. Their favorite song was Johnny Mercer’s “Moon River” as they were like “two drifters, off to see the world”. She followed, actually led the charge, as her husband changed duty stations with the US Air Force. They were inseparable and explored wherever they happened to be stationed, whether it was in Europe or the United States. May loved this country and very proudly became a citizen in 1977.
May was a social person and loved people and loved to party. Her very favorite pastime was dancing. She used to say that she and Dave had “waltzed their way around the world”. They were blessed with their baby girl Laura in 1964. Laura accompanied her parents until her Dad retired in 1979 from the Air Force. Laura, whom her parents are so proud of, followed in her Dad’s footsteps pursuing a military career. She is still serving her country as a Colonel in the US Army, stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: SOS Animal Shelter, 25944 Hwy. 84, Enterprise, AL 36330 or DaySpring Hospice, PO Box 311246, Enterprise, AL 36331-1246.
May was preceded on her journey by her father, John Gillespie Mailer, her mother, Mary Mailer (Nee) Lumsden and a beloved sister, Anne Waugh.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel. Interment will follow at a later date.
