DOTHAN. . .Mary Whatley Vardamaskos, a resident of Dothan, died Saturday afternoon, July 2, 2016, at her home. She was 78.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 5, 2016, in the Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Reverend Bob Sanders and Reverend John Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, between Dothan and Headland. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 1231 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL 36301 or to Covenant Care, 1512 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301.
Mrs. Vardamaskos was born and reared in the Pleasant Plains Community of Henry County, daughter of the late Harvey Whatley and Lillie Hughes Whatley. She moved to Dothan in 1955. Mrs. Vardamaskos was employed by Sears as a Sales Clerk for over thirty years, retiring in 1998. She was a member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church and the Mary Carpenter Sunday School Class. Mrs. Vardamaskos was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila Kay Lewis, three sisters, Christine Kirby, Jackie Watford and Becky Whatley, and a brother, Harvey “Preacher” Whatley.
Surviving relatives include her husband, John Vardamaskos; three sons, Ricky Lewis, Jay Lewis (Rhonda),and Clay Lewis (Wendy), all of Dothan; a sister, Margaret Howard (Billy), Ashford; two brothers, James Whatley (Jean), Ashford; and Jerry Whatley (Kitty), Molino, FL; a brother-in-law, Albert Watford, Dothan; five grandchildren, Crystal Lee (Ross), Jessica Lewis, Kayla Lewis, Cody Lewis and Matthew Lewis.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Clay Lewis, Jay Lewis, Tony Jackson, Todd Jackson, Cody Lewis, Matthew Lewis and Ricky Lewis.
