Matthew Chris McNeil, 39, of Dothan, passed away Friday, May 20, 2022 at Southeast Health surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with Friedrichs Ataxia which took his body but not his mind and spirit.
An Informal gathering of family and friends to celebrate Matthew McNeil’s life will be held by his mother, Donna 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Bower Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 301 Wild Avenue, Evergreen, Alabama, 36401.
A memorial service to celebrate his life hosted by his father, Chris, will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Dothan Church of God, 601 Hedstrom Drive, with Dr. Buford Smith officiating. There will be a visitation following the memorial service at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Friedrichs Ataxia Research Allianz (FARA), Love in Action, 279 West Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36301 or Dothan Church of God, 601 Hedstrom Drive, Dothan, AL, 36301.
Matthew was born March 3, 1983 in Mobile, Alabama and lived the early years of his life in Bay Minette. In 1990, he moved to Dothan. He attended Emmanuel Christian School for several years and was a 2001 graduate of Rehobeth High School. Matthew also attended Troy University. He was an avid sportsman who loved the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Atlanta Braves.
Matt was a compassionate man and had a humble disposition. He also had a great sense of humor. He was very affectionate and had a deep love of God and family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Matthew has changed the lives of those who got to know him and left an imprint on their hearts.
Matthew is predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Sam and Flois Salter, paternal grandparents, Billie Joe and Hazel McNeil, an uncle, Jerry Salter, a cousin, Marc Pitchford and an uncle, Alton Pitchford.
He is survived by his mother, Donna Salter McNeil (Julie Thorne) of Dothan; his father, Chris McNeil (Anita) of Dothan; a sister, Susan Echols (James) of Dothan; a brother, Andrew McNeil (Abby) of Cowarts; several aunts, uncles and cousins; a very special canine companion, Wizzy.
The family would like to thank Patricia Grice, Sherrie Dismukes, Kindred Home Health and Hospice and the SAIL program for their kind and compassionate care of Matthew.
