Mattie Cal Dixon, a resident of Dothan passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2019. She was 87 years old. She was born September 25, 1931 to the late Henry Dixon and Lessie Brundidge Dixon. She attended Covington County Training School where she played basketball then went on to attend Alabama State University in Montgomery.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Stringer Street A.M.E. Church with Rev. Frederick D. Sherrod officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 12-1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Ms. Dixon worked at Bishop’s Cleaners for many years and retired from Unifirst in 1995. She has been a member of Stringer Street A.M.E. Church for 44 years. She served as steward and sang in the Senior Choir, and served as a class leader, missionary with the Bighem-Long WMS, and Silver Sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Dixon and Lessie Dixon (Roy C.) Long; sisters, Josephine Dixon and Earlene Dixon Henderson; son, Reginald Dixon; grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Her memory will be cherished by her son, CW3 (Ret.) Alfonse (Jeanette) Dixon of Suffolk, VA; daughters, Deborah Covington, Carolyn (Reggie) Kyles, and Melissa (Horace, III) Jackson, all of Dothan, AL; sisters, Maggie Pearl Hairiston and Constance Bethune of Montgomery, AL; grandchildren, Lakia Edwards, Monique Johnson, Jolene (Brad) Kyles, Samone (Akbar) Rivers, Steven (Mebrat) Dixon, Shawn (Tabitha) Williams, Dominique (Skylar) Larue, Crystal (Duran) Bass, and Barbara Kirkland; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, Kayden; special cousin, Juanita Vinson of Opp, AL; extended family, Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah & Gracie Alexander, Mrs. Fronie Turner, Brenda Varner, Princella Thompson, Greg Robinson, and LaVonda Francis.
We cherished our time with you and shall never forget and will carry you with us always.
