ABBEVILLE. . .Mattie Lou Helms English, a resident of Abbeville, died Monday night, August 3, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her loving children. She was 97 years of age.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 6, 2015 in the Sykes Creek Baptist Church, near Clio, with Reverend Spurgeon Baker and Reverend Kenneth Andrews officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the mortuary in Abbeville.
Mrs. English was born and reared in the Pine Level community of Barbour County, daughter of the late Walter Jackson Helms and Nora Lee Grice Helms. She lived in the Clio area most of her adult lifetime before moving to Abbeville in 1995. Mrs. English was the oldest member of the Sykes Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack John English, a sister, Bernice Helms, and a brother, Marvette Helms.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Betty Freeman (Sam), Edwin Community; and Judy Pinson (Glenn), Blue Springs; a son, Bobby English (Blondine), Cairo, GA; a sister, Cornelia Jordan, Athens, TX; a brother, Ralph Helms (Opie), Phenix City; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Helms, Skipperville; eight grandchildren, Charlotte Moore (Scott), Dennis Herrick (Mimi), Sonya Snow (Mike), Candi Thomas (Lee), Misty Norton (Blake), Chad Tyler (Tina), Eric Tyler (Melissa), and Todd Tyler (Sanet); nineteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Serving as active pallbearers will be the grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
The family would like express their appreciation to Judy Riley, Charlotte Moore, Sonya Snow and AlaCare Hospice including Angela Armstrong, for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. English during her illness.
