Mattie Lear Creel
Mattie Lear Creel, 95, a resident of Extendicare, passed away there, Wednesday, May 30, 2012.
Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Cowarts Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Coley Holloway and Rev. Johnny Roberts officiating and Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday. At other times the family will be at the home of a daughter, 45 Martha Street, Cowarts.
Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to Cowarts Baptist Church “Cemetery Fund”, P.O. Drawer 10, Cowarts, AL 36321.
Mrs. Creel was born November 21, 1916 in Houston County, Alabama where she lived all of her life. She retired from Wex-Tex Manufacturing in Ashford after 30 years of service. She loved to fish and read and was an avid fan of Alabama football and Braves baseball. Mrs. Creel lived at Extendicare for the past 8 ½ years where she was Ms. Extendicare of 2004 and enjoyed her bingo days. She made lots of friends and considered everyone there her extended family. She was a member of Cowarts Baptist Church.
Mrs. Creel is predeceased by her parents, Jacob Solon and Ella Virginia Carlton Thornell; six brothers; three sisters; her husband, Edward Lee Creel; a son, Bobby Edward Creel and a daughter, Annie Louise Creel.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Jimmy) Williams of Cowarts and Christine (Dennis) Campbell, of Dothan; grandchildren, Zandy (Tracy) Williams of Fairfax, VA, Kim Hicks, Dothan, Bobbie (Hoyt) Mayo of Cowarts, Leesa (Bob) Fryer of Land’O’Lakes, FL and Lee Smith of Dothan; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters-in-law, Cleo Love and Mary Ellen Thornell, both of Dothan; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Son-in-laws and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Extendicare for their love and support of Mrs. Creel.
