TUMBLETON COMMUNITY…Susie Mauline Smith Oates, a resident of the Tumbleton Community in Henry County, died Tuesday morning, May 21, 2019, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. She was 98.
Private graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 23, 2019, in the New Zion Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Joey Pettis officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Zion Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, in c/o David Teat, 10033 County Road 47, Shorterville, AL 36373.
Mauline Oates was born on May 14, 1921, in Capps, Alabama in Henry County. She attended Tumbleton Elementary and Junior High School, graduating from Newville High School in 1940. She soon married Johney Ed Oates from Tumbleton and moved to the family farm where she resided the remainder of her lifetime. She was the oldest living member of New Zion Freewill Baptist Church.
Mrs. Oates was preceded in death by her husband, Johney Ed Oates, with whom she was married to for 70 years, her parents, William Jefferson (Doll) Smith, Jr. and Maggie Leona Capps Smith; two brothers, Ralph A. Smith (Edna) and D. Bowman Smith (Darrell), two sisters, Mildred Smith Bedsole (Floyd) and Lorrell Smith Barnes (Frank).
Surviving relatives include her son, Pat Edward Oates (Brenda), a sister-in-law, Johnnie Ruth Taylor; three grandchildren, Matthew Oates (Didi), Lucas Oates (Whitney) and Rachel Oates Ranczka (Cory), four great-grandchildren, Jase Oates, Jonah Oates, Ethan Davis and Cameron Nichols; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, T. Larry Smith.
