Mavis Ausley Slay, 79, of Geneva, gained her angel's wings on June 2, 2023, surrounded by loving family and friends at her home.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at Maple Avenue Baptist Church in Geneva with Rev. Ricky Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the McDuffie Family Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
Mavis was born on June 27, 1943, in Geneva to the late Luther Hampton and Jewell Griggs Ausley. She retired from the State of Alabama Department of Industrial Relations after 39 years of service. Her last post was as Manager of the Career Center in Dothan. She also served on the state's Disaster Team and would be activated to go to job sites to help displaced workers receive benefits after natural disasters.
Mavis graduated from Geneva High School in 1961, where she enjoyed being a varsity cheerleader. Along with her husband, Robert, she never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Panthers and attended as many games as she could, especially when her children and grandchildren were involved. She LOVED the Geneva Panthers and her '61 classmates with all her heart!
After high school, Mavis attended Auburn University. While at Auburn, she was voted Loveliest of the Plains, as well as Sweetheart of Magnolia Dorms. She was an avid Auburn fan---WAR EAGLE!
If you asked her friends, they would describe Mavis as loving, funny, compassionate and bubbly. She never met a stranger! She got so much pleasure from being a mom to her two daughters and "Mimi" to her two grandchildren.
Mavis loved to volunteer and was proud to serve three years as president of the Geneva High School Band Boosters. Probably her most special volunteer activity was serving on the Robert Fowler Park Board. She enjoyed taking everyone down to "The Junction" to show off all their progress and to discuss future plans and events. She was a founding member of the Geneva Band Foundation. Mavis was an active member of the Loyalty Chapter Number 438 of the Order of the Eastern Star for 59 years.
Mavis was a member of Maple Avenue Baptist Church in Geneva, where she greatly enjoyed teaching children's church. She loved all young people so much and taught at the church over 20 years. She was also proud to serve on the Bereavement Committee, making her yummy Southern dishes to share with grieving families.
In her spare time, Mavis enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, working in her yards, painting and talking on the phone. She was always willing to lend a helping hand or a listening ear to someone in need.
In addition to her parents, she was welcomed into Heaven by Robert, her husband of 57 years; her brother, Wilbur Hampton Ausley; and her beautiful granddaughter, Cassidy Leigh Dunn.
Mavis is survived by her two daughters, Angela Michele Slay Risman (Keith) of Eufaula: Milisa Alayne Sims (Stan) of Geneva and grandson, Clayton Ellis Dunn of Auburn. She will be fondly remembered by her four siblings; Max (Carol) Ausley of Geneva; Mildred Gerleman of Dothan; Merle (Glenn) Jones of Wylie, Texas; and Linda (Bernard) Smitherman of Dothan; one sister-in-law, Margaret Ausley of Nokesville, Virginia; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, classmates and friends.
The family will receive flowers or memorial contributions can be made in Mavis' memory to the Cassidy Dunn Scholarship Fund at Geneva High School, 500 Panther Drive, Geneva, Alabama 36340.
The family would like to thank Southeast Health Hematology and Oncology, Wiregrass Medical Center, Gentiva Hospice and Rhonda Stone for their excellent health care.
