MAVIS WHIDDON RONEY
NEWVILLE. . .Mavis Whiddon Roney, a resident of Newville, died early Saturday morning, March 4, 2017, in a Dothan hospital. She was 96.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 6, 2017, in the Newville Baptist Church with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in the Newville Baptist Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Monday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 13, Newville, AL 36353.
Mrs. Roney was born and reared in Newville, daughter of the late Joseph Macon Bowen and Cora Mercer Bowen. She was the oldest member of the Newville Baptist Church where she formerly sang in the church choir and was also a member of the Agape Sunday School Class. Mrs. Roney was retired as the owner and operator of a beauty shop in Newville. In earlier years, she was employed by WestPoint Stevens. Mrs. Roney was preceded in death by her husbands, Lee Eftis Whiddon and Louie Roney, a son, Gary Whiddon, a great-grandson, Joshua Randle Adkins, and a sister, Dorothy Russo.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Oona Neal Adkins, Webb; and Renee Arnold (Fred), Abbeville; special family members, Jean Whiddon, Linda McIntosh and Elaine Whiddon; grandchildren, Steve Whiddon, Stanley Whiddon (Barbara), Alicia Cheshier (Jack), Derek Adkins, Traci Wingate (John), Tara Reiley (Jason), Brandon Arnold (Kelly) and Lindsay Padgett (Alston); thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Brandon Arnold, Derek Adkins, Steve Whiddon, Stanley Whiddon, Fletcher Whiddon, Wyatt Whiddon and Chris Whiddon.
