SKIPPERVILLE. . .On the evening of February 13, 2018, the Lord called Max Watson from his earthly home into heaven to be reunited with many precious loved ones. Sam Max Watson known as “Max” was born September 25, 1940 in his family’s home in Skipperville, Alabama. He was the only child born to Sam and Lois Phillips Watson. The Lord blessed us with 77 years to spend with Max.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 17, 2018, in the Morgan Baptist Church with Reverend Tim Sewell and Reverend Bill Weed officiating. Burial will follow in the Beersheba Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Friday at the mortuary in Abbeville.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beersheba Cemetery, c/o Rhonda Watson, 3684 County Road 333, Skipperville, AL 36374.


            Max Watson grew up in a loving home and began working at an early age helping his father farm and operate the family owned business, The Sam Watson Rolling Store. He attended Skipperville Jr. High School and graduated from Carroll High School in 1958. Upon graduation, he continued working with the family’s country store. On November 22, 1963, he began working in Dothan with Blumberg’s Department Store. During his tenure with Blumberg’s, he was the manager of the men’s clothing and shoe department. In 1977, he bought his own businesses, Glawson-Pearce Men’s Store and Martin Shoe Store in Northside Mall. In 1989, he started working at AAA Cooper as Account Manager, traveling all over the southern United States. He retired from AAA Cooper in 2008.


            Max was a member of the Dothan Rotary Club. He was a charter member of the Dale County Water Authority and instrumental in securing funding for the initial water lines and the first water well for the water system. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and riding four wheelers. Max was a lifelong member of the Landmark Park Foundation and donated the one room log cabin in memory of his parents to help preserve the rural lifestyle heritage. He was an active member of the Morgan Baptist Church since the 1940’s and was the Chairman of the Beersheba Cemetery committee.


            Max is preceded in death by his parents, Lois Phillips Watson on July 16, 1958 and Sam Watson in February 27, 1971, grandparents, Joe and Ella Johnson of Ariton and Ben and Sarah Caroline Turner Watson of Skipperville, and the mother of his daughter, Peggy Payne Watson of Asbury, step-son, Darrell Dossey and a step-grandson, Joshua Dossey.


            Max is survived by his wife of 25 years, Linda Horne Watson; daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Larry Hughes, Abbeville; step-daughters, Denene Wright (David Strickland), and Deitra Dossey (Don Smith), and step-daughter in law, Julie Dossey, all of Ocala, FL; a grandson, Samuel York, step-grandchildren, David Dossey and Delaney Wright; many cousins and friends also survive.


            Serving as honorary pallbearers will be former employees of Blumberg Department Store, Dale County Water Authority and Employees of AAA Cooper Transportation. Serving as active pallbearers will be Jeff Watson, Edsel Watson, Jimmy Watson, Samuel York, Neal Powell and Don Snell.


            The family would like to express their appreciation to the Morgan Church community, Southern Clinic, Cardiology & Associates, Urology & Associates, the C.C.U. Unit at UAB, the Southeast Alabama Medical Center and Community Hospice for the loving care provided to Max and his family.
