Mr. Melvin Floyd Buckner, 88, passed away Monday, November 19, 2012 while on a cruise with his family.
The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church in Enterprise on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1:00 p.m. until the Memorial Service at 2:00.
Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) Foreign Mission Supply Fund, 217 South Main Street, Enterprise, Alabama 36330. Mr. Buckner’s foreign mission trips included Puerto Rico, Bolivia, Honduras, Panama, Mexico, and Costa Rica. He also went on mission trips in the U.S.to Arizona, New Mexico, Georgia and Kentucky. He was an enthusiastic supporter of missionaries at home and abroad.
Mr. Buckner was born on July 21, 1924 in Phenix City, Alabama to the late James and Leila Buckner. He was the youngest of seven children. At the age of 18, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the 472nd Quartermaster Trucking Regiment in India/Burma/China for three years until the end of World War ll. He attended Troy State University and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Textile Engineering. Mr. Buckner was the general manager/supervisor of Bama Cotton Mill in Enterprise. Later, he began building homes with Buckner Construction Company in Enterprise.
Mr. Buckner dearly loved and was married to Hazel Roberts Buckner for 63 years. His four daughters are Becky Johnson (James Ed) Hoover, AL, Karyn Sessions (Mo ) Enterprise, AL, Lisa Harrison (Will) Peachtree City, GA and Kelly King, Peachtree City, Ga. He had 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
