Melvin L. “Butch” Nelson passed away October 5, 2015, at his home in Geneva, AL. He was 73.
Memorialization will be by cremation with Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory of Geneva in charge. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday October 17, 2015 at the First Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Samson, AL.
Melvin was born December 12, 1941 to Wilmer and Alta Nelson in Sanborn County, SD. Melvin attended school in Forestburg, SC until he enlisted in the US Navy in August, 1959. He remained in the Navy until August, 1968, during which time he received his GED. He married Alice Cartwright in March, 1964. Melvin and Alice made a life together in Texas until they both retired. They then moved to Enterprise, AL where they bought a convenience store/gas station. They had been married for 47 years when Alice passed away in September, 2010 while living in Samson, AL. Melvin bought a motor home and hoped to travel around the country. He married Louise Simon in June, 2014. Together they filled that “bucket list” and traveled all over the United States. Louise passed in February, 2015. Family was important to Melvin and after talking to his brother and sisters his last words were, “I love you all.”
He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer and Alta Nelson, a brother, Bill Nelson, and his two wives, Alice and Louise.
Survivors include his sisters: Marlene (Buell) Jones, Linda (Don) Godfrey, Diane (Hans) Ernst; a brother, Ronnie (Pam) Nelson; in-laws, Huey (Glenda) Cartwright; step daughter, Michelle (Scott) Milligan; aunt, Nancy Beck; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
