Melvin L. “Mel” Dodson, age 74, a resident of Dothan, AL passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 1:10 am after an extended, hard fought battle with cancer in Dothan, AL.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 17, 2022 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
Mel was born on January 7, 1948 in Clarksdale, Mississippi to Buford Tilton and Adelle Dodson. He graduated from Tunica County High School in Tunica, MS in 1966. Mel worked in the water well business for 47 years, where he made many lifelong friendships. He worked at Carloss Water Well Supply, Graves Well Drilling and Donald Smith Company, retiring in 2019.
Mel enjoyed spending time at the lake house. He loved to host his family and friends grilling and fishing at the lake. These were his most prized memories of time spent together with those that he loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Buford Tilton and Adelle Dodson; brother, Harold Dodson; and sister, Buford D. Buchanan.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Donna; children, Melanee (Chris) Erwin; Justin (Amanda)Dodson and Ricky (Lauren) Dodson; 7 grandchildren, Molli Kate, Miller, Lillie Grace and Cullen Erwin, Mattie, Landon and Collier Dodson, who loved their grandpa very much and enjoyed lots of fun with him. Mel is also survived by his brothers, Bradford (Linda) Dodson and Stan (Teresa) Dodson; sisters, Dorothy Lester and RoseMary Foster; mother-in-law, Mayme Murphy; sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Bryan Hulse; multiple nieces and nephews; many cherished friends; and two furry companions, Dixie and Traveller, who loved him dearly.
Serving as pallbearers will be Matt Singletary, Rhett Sanders, Bryan Hulse, Joey Bonds, Mark Foster and Dr. John Searcy.
