MEREDITH LATHAN KING
DOTHAN. . .Meredith Lathan King, a resident of Dothan, died Wednesday night, May 7, 2014, in Westside Terrace. He was 93.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 12, 2014, in the First United Methodist Church of Dothan with Dr. James B. Sanders, III and Reverend Bruce Johnson officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Pinckard Memorial Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Monday in the church parlor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dothan Pilot’s Club, c/o Project Lifesaver, P.O. Box 340, Dothan, AL 36302 or to the church of your choice.
Mr. King was born and reared in Hendersonville, North Carolina, son of the late Meredith L. King and Mary Dollie McCall King. He served his country in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon discharge from the military, Mr. King was employed by the Civil Aeronautics Administration. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina, and a Master’s Degree in Spanish from the University of Florida. Mr. King furthered his education at Troy University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Colorado. He retired in 1983 from Wallace Community College as an English and Spanish instructor. In earlier years, he taught Spanish at Dothan High School and in the Pinellas County, Florida School System. He lived in Hickory, North Carolina and St. Petersburg, Florida before moving to Dothan in 1962.
A member of the First United Methodist Church, Mr. King was a former member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church and the Lafayette Street United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by ten sisters, and three brothers.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Evelyn Pilcher King; two daughters, Jan King Phelps, Marietta, GA; and Lyn King Saunders (Tom), Piney River, VA; a son, Kim Alva King (Nadia), Huntsville, AL; seven grandchildren, Sean King, Ryan King, Samar King-Abu Jabal (Hisham), Thomas Saunders, Christi Saunders, Caleb Saunders, and Tessa Phelps; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law from the Pilcher family, Gladys Pilcher Adams Howell (Crawford), Dothan; Helen Pilcher Gissendanner, Pinckard; and Sandra Pilcher Windham (Sterling), Dothan; several nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Alan Adams, Ted Adams, Joey Pilcher, C.L. Harvey, Sterling Windham, and Keith Windham.
