Merrill Kendrick “Jiggs” Welch, a resident of Headland, died Tuesday night, December 13, 2016, at his home. He was 80.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 15, 2016, in the Concord Baptist Church with Reverend Scott Wyatt and Reverend Sam White officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the church sanctuary.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Concord Baptist Church, c/o Janara Parrish, 1350 County Road 14, Newville, AL 36353.


            Mr. Welch was born and reared in Barbour County, near Blue Springs, son of the late Stoney Harrison Welch and Clara Mae Henderson Welch. He lived in Headland most of his adult lifetime. Mr. Welch was a member of the Concord Baptist Church. He was employed for many years as a Fork Lift Driver for Golden Peanut Company in Headland. In earlier years, he was engaged in farming. Mr. Welch was preceded in death by a sister, Sybil Spivey and two brothers, Tom Welch and Kenneth Welch.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Mavis Fleming Welch; three daughters, Lisa Paramore (Bo),Grimes; Patsy Barron (Tracy), Kinsey; and Kendra Pope, Dothan; a son, Michael Welch (Madlyn), Taylor, AL; two sisters, Joy Smith, Headland; and Wisteria Key, Headland; a sister-in-law, Shirley Welch, Headland; thirteen grandchildren, Amanda Watson, Blake Watson (Megan), Heather Dean, Tyler Dean, Joshua Cobb, Hilliary Lott (Damon), Matthew Welch (Jessica),  Haley Murphy (Ryan), Brooke Allen (Artie), Gabby Qualls (Blake), Colby Pope, Holt Lashley and Kelsee Overstreet; ten  great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Keith Welch, Paul Smith, Phillip Smith, David Key, Steve Key and Bobby Smith.
