ABBEVILLE. . .Mertice L. “Hot” Bailey, a resident of Abbeville, died early Monday morning, September 23, 2024, in a Dothan hospital. He was 78.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 25, 2024, in the Judson Baptist Church with Reverend Brandon Turner officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Judson Baptist Church c/o Ann Watford, P.O. Box 224, Abbeville, AL 36310.


            Mertice Bailey was a lifelong resident of the Screamer community of Henry County, son of the late Ruben Lee Bailey and Addie Wilson Bailey. He served his country in the Army Reserve in the Abbeville unit. Mertice was a member of the Judson Baptist Church and the Screamer Hunting Club for many years. He was retired from Michelin Tire as Inspector. Mertice was preceded in death by his former wives, Deloris Bailey and Gloria Bailey, a sister, Lottie Huntsman, a brother, Loyd Thomas Bailey and his wife, Betty Bailey.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Robin Sauls Bailey; his sons, Russell Bailey and Kenneth Bailey (Angela), all of Abbeville; his step-children, Derek Sauls (Sandra), and Shannon Holman (Alan); grandchildren, Brooke Yocum, Paige Bailey, Morgan Bailey, Jamie Bailey, Aaron Bailey (Shannon) and Lindsey Price; eight great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Rayne Danzey, Ethan Danzey and Jacob Sauls; several nieces and nephews; Mertice’s best friend, Lamar Turner, and a special fur baby, “Gabi”.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Aaron Bailey, Bobby Bailey, T. J. East, Brian Hatcher, Derrick Sauls and Shawn English. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of Men Sharing Life.
