Michael Gene Skoglund, 82, of Dothan passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held 3 pm Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Tate and Rev. Rick Glenn officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
Michael was born April 10, 1930 in Alturus, CA. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy. He also served with the U. S. Army and the Air National Guard. He completed many tours of duty serving in Morocco, Denmark, and Korea. Michael felt that his greatest accomplishment was being assigned to the Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees). Following his expansive military career he retired in 1987. Upon his retirement, he spent time traveling with his wife, enjoying his grandchildren, and working in his shop. He was preceded in death by his daughter Deborah Sue Skoglund, his mother Ester Overton, his grandson William Lindsey, his son-in-law Lt. Gary Lindsey, and his granddaughter Keisha Walker.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years Audrey Sasser Skoglund; his sons, Daniel (Venetia) Skoglund and Ralph (Cindy) Mitchell; his daughters, Sheree Skoglund Lindsey, Annise (Jeffery) Crawford and Michelle (Jerry) King; his grandchildren, Jaclyn Crawford, Ian (Amy) Skoglund, Lori Lindsey, Ashley (Nicholas) Ramos, Gabriel Mitchell, William King, Michael King, and Kathryn Crawford; his great-grandchildren, Noah Ramos, Natalie Ramos, Nicholas Ramos, Adrian Crawford, Madelyn Skoglund and Makenna Skoglund; special friends, Tom, Donna, and Mike Devine, Bruce and Sue Collins, Kenny Purvis, Jeremy Watkins, and Joe and Desiree Bateman and their sons; his church congregation at Memphis Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be Tom Devine, Mike Devine, Morris Bishop, Phillip Pippin, Ron Churchwell, and Joe Hughes.
