A celebration of life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Pastor Bradley Rushing and Danny Sumerlin officiating. The family will be receiving friends the day prior on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 5-7pm in the Sunset Chapel.
Michael Dale Roberts, known affectionately by friends and family as Mike, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 74. Born on January 9, 1950, Mike's journey through life was marked by his unwavering kindness, a deep commitment to his family, and a generous spirit that touched everyone he met.
Mike leaves behind his beloved wife of 36 years, Carol Roberts, who was the recipient of many of the wonderful things he enjoyed building. Together, they raised a family that includes sons Ben Roberts (Nanette) and Chris Roberts (Raven). Although his daughter, Tracie Hawlett, predeceased him, her memory remained a cherished part of his life. His grandchildren, John Martin, Henry, Thomas, Luke, Callahan, and Delta Roberts, will miss their grandfather's loving presence and the life lessons he imparted. He is also survived by his brother, Jon Marc Roberts (Joyce), and he joins his late brothers, Charles and Ricky Roberts, and his parents, Lilian Miley and Woodrow Roberts, in eternal rest. Mike's fur babies, Brownie and Molly, along with his special family friend, the late Charlotte Paschal, held significant places in his heart.
With a career that spanned several decades, Mike retired as a conductor and brakeman from the railroad, a job he performed with dedication and pride. He later served as a shop manager at a Building Supply and found joy in the daily routines of farm management at Landmark Park, a role he embraced full-time in March 2022. His involvement with the Wiregrass Museum of Art as a facilities manager was a testament to his appreciation for the arts and community service.
Mike's interests were as varied as they were passionate. A skilled deer and turkey hunter, he was also known for his famous smoked Boston Butt, a treat that showcased his culinary skills. An avid Alabama fan, Mike found pleasure in fishing and was a true family man who was deeply involved in church projects. His commitment to service was evident in his help at Shocco Springs and his frequent mission trips. In 2021, his dedication was recognized when he received the Volunteer of the Year award at Landmark Park, and his prowess in the outdoors was honored with the Hunter of the Year trophy. Above all, Mike was known for having a "Giver's Heart," always ready to lend a hand and uplift those around him.
Mike's legacy is not merely in the things he built with his hands but also in the lives he shaped with his heart. His unwavering support, laughter, and the warmth of his spirit will forever be remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In honor of Mike's extraordinary life, let us carry forward the torch of compassion and generosity he held so high. In doing so, we keep his spirit alive and ensure that his legacy endures, not just in our memories, but in the goodness, we spread in the world, just as he did. Mike Roberts will be deeply missed, but the love he shared will continue to light our way.
