MILDRED HELMS JOHNSON
HEADLAND, AL… Mildred Helms Johnson, a resident of Headland, Alabama, passed away Monday night, May 9, 2022, at Extendicare Health Center. She was 93.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Blackwood Church with Pastor Jonathan Tomlin officiating. A eulogy will be given by Laura Johnson. Burial will follow in the Blackwood Church Cemetery with Brother Bill Smith. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Wright Funeral Home & Crematory.
Flowers will be accepted or the family request contributions be made to the Blackwood Church; c/o Janice Hodges Green, 155 Sweetwater Dr., Headland, Alabama 36345.
Mrs. Johnson was born November 28, 1928 on a Barbour County, Alabama Farm to the late Quinton Winford Helms, Sr. and Fannie Evans Helms. She grew up as one of eight children and moved to Headland, Alabama when she married her late husband, Merwin O. Johnson. Together they owned and operated Johnson 5M Farm with their children; Marty, Myron, and Marie. Mildred helped on the farm and milked cows selling the milk and butter, until the last child finished school. She was an active member of the Blackwood Church for seventy-five years, where she held many positions and participated in all church activities. She was also a key member of the Blackwood Homemakers Club for over 40 years. She participated in the Newville Senior Center. She enjoyed cooking for friends and family, putting up vegetables, sewing, working in her yard, and picking up pecans. She moved to Azalea Court Assisted Living facility in 2018 and then Extendicare Health Center in 2021.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Kay Johnson; her son, Marty Johnson; her daughter-in-law, Cindy Johnson; her sister, Catherine Seagers; her brothers, John Helms, James Helms, and Quinton Helms, Jr.; and a special nephew, Eric Tew.
Leaving to cherish her memories is her daughter, Marie J. Kirkland (Phil); her son, Myron Johnson (Laura); her sister Mary Ann Tew (David); her brothers, Haywood Helms (Minnie) and Durwood Helms (Betty); her grandchildren, Aimee Starling (Michael), Phillip Kirkland (Michelle), Victoria Lamberth (Andre), Kendell Coker (Jessie), Calin Johnson (Ashley), Michael Parris (Tara), Kylie Miller (Tom); and her fourteen great-grandchildren; a special niece, Andrea Tew and her children, Beth Jones (Aaron), Emily Jones (Brannon), and Ben Tew; several other nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Calin Johnson, Ben Tew, Jimmy Helms, Kevin Helms, Phillip Kirkland, and Kris Balkcom.
