MOLLY  WHITEHEAD COMMANDER


 


ABBEVILLE. . .Molly Rachel Whitehead Commander, a resident of Henry County, near Abbeville, passed away late Friday afternoon, July 5, 2013, in a Dothan hospital. She was 84.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, July 7, 2013, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Dr. Paul Roten and Reverend Neil Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakey Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Abbeville.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church of Dothan, 1936 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan, AL 36301, or Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation, 5151 Wisconsin Ave., N.W., Suite 420, Washington, D.C. 20016.


            Mrs. Commander was born in Henry County, near Abbeville, on April 15, 1929. She was the youngest child and only daughter of the late George Washington Whitehead and Vassie Davirson Whitehead. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years, James W. Commander.


            Mrs. Commander graduated as Valedictorian from Abbeville High School in 1948. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Alabama State College for Women, now named the University of Montevallo in 1952. Mrs. Commander enjoyed a lengthy career as a teacher in the Henry County, Alabama and Bay County, Florida School Systems. She did extensive work at Florida State University and worked as a Supervisor of Student Teacher Interns while in Florida.


            She returned to Headland Elementary School and completed thirty-four years of teaching. Mrs. Commander received the Teacher of the Year Award at the Headland Elementary School in 1983-84.


            Mrs. Commander was an example of Christian womanhood who deeply loved her God, her country, her family, her friends, and her many pupils in school. A gifted, patient, and caring person, she is remembered for imparting a deep love of reading and learning to countless young people.


            As a member of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, she gave her steadfast support of its mission to protect, improve, and strengthen America’s social insurance program. She received a Certificate of Recognition in her honor. Her name is permanently inscribed in the Leadership Circle Roll of Honor on display at the National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C.


            Mrs. Commander was preceded in death by nephews, David Whitehead, Will Reagan, Robert Whitehead, Phil Whitehead,  a niece, Peggy June Whitehead Money, her brothers, Woodrow Whitehead, Moody Whitehead, Wixie Whitehead, Junior Whitehead, and Milton Whitehead.


            Surviving relatives include, Randy Whitehead and wife, Shirley, Jimmy Whitehead, Doc Whitehead and wife, Nora, all of Abbeville; John Whitehead and wife, Diane, Warwick, GA; Tim Whitehead and wife, Von, Abbeville; Serena Coleman, and Lillian Millett and husband, Rylan, all of Melbourne, FL; Shirley Money and husband, Russell, Abbeville; Della Searcy and husband, Tommy, Shorterville; and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be mostly her students, Andy Davis, Steve Parrish, Glenn Morgan, Derek Wright, Chris Capps, Joe Money, and Clay Money. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Mr. and Mrs. William Covington, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Davis, Mrs. Carol Roten, Mrs. Lynn Dansby, Mrs. Stephanie Crowe, Mrs. Gwen Barefield, Ron Abernathy, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Granberry, Mr. and Mrs. Mack Murphy, T. Larry Smith, Mrs. Virginia Walker, K.R. and Lutrelle Ham, and Mrs. Winnie Dell Murray.


            The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Mrs. Beulah Morgan, her caregiver.
