Monroe Gilley, Sr., 78, a resident of Dothan passed away on Monday, October 3, 2016 at his residence.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Buddy Hood officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.


Mr. Gilley was born on November 27, 1937 in Columbus, Georgia and lived the early part of his life in Smiths Station, Alabama. He joined the U.S. Army and later transferred to the U.S. Air Force and served for 5 years. He was a pipefitter and welder for over 50 years until his retirement. Mr. Gilley was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, a member of the United Association of Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union No. 52 in Montgomery, AL, and was an avid golfer at the Highlands.


Survivors include his wife of 60 years June Gilley; his sons, Michael (Melissa) Gilley and Leonard (Connie) Gilley; his grandchildren, Anthony Gilley, Joseph Gilley, and Madison Gilley; 4 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
