On Wednesday, February 3, 2021, Buell “Herbert” Harrison, 95, joined the saints and angels in Heaven to spend all eternity praising and worshiping God. At the time of his death from natural causes, Mr. Harrison was a resident of Extendicare in Dothan, Alabama.
Herbert Harrison was born on January 4, 1926, in rural Coffee County, Alabama, not far from Enterprise and New Brockton. He was the second of seven children born to Connie Daniel Harrison and Connie Lou Flowers Harrison. He graduated from New Brockton High School in 1946. Mr. Harrison married Sarah Nell Goodson, the love of his life, on February 18, 1950, in Enterprise, Alabama. He often said, “Sarah was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Together, they raised and loved three children, residing in Dothan for the last 60 years of his life. After graduating high school, Mr. Harrison worked for several years in the insurance business in various locations in southeast Alabama. He moved his family to Dothan for good in 1960. In 1965, he was hired as a civilian servant working in the Finance and Accounting Division at Fort Rucker. When he retired from Fort Rucker in 1988, Mr. Harrison was Chief of the Accounts Payable Section.
Mr. Harrison is survived by his two daughters, Dianne Harrison Nall (Roger) of Cowarts, and Cindy Harrison Smith (Paul) of Midland City; his son Dennis Harrison (Ragan) of Auburn; two sisters, Voncille Stone of Texas and Shirley Sanders of Level Plains; one brother, Kenneth Harrison of Enterprise; five grandchildren, Michael Nall, Jonathan Nall, Justin Harrison (Kelly), Seth Harrison (Ashley), and Dustin Norris (Stephanie); five great grandchildren, Macy Waggoner (Danny), Branson Nall (Jada Payne), Caleb Hammond, Madison Harrison, and Jase Harrison; two great-great grandchildren, Calvin and Janie Waggoner; and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. Mr. Harrison was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Sarah Nell Harrison; his parents, Connie and Lou Harrison; and three brothers, Ralph Harrison, Fred Harrison, and Charles Harrison.
Mr. Harrison’s main focus in life was his relationship with God and his family. He was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church where he attended faithfully until his health would no longer permit him to do so. He was a great prayer warrior and strong witness for Jesus Christ. A more humble and honest man you will not find. He was a devoted husband and a tremendous father, and grandfather. He was a man of high integrity and character who led by example, as evidenced by the loving care he provided his ailing wife the last twenty-five years of her life. He was respected, admired and genuinely loved by all those who knew him personally. His care and concern for others always spoke louder than his words. His family and friends will surely miss him, but they have the firm assurance that his passing was not his end, just the next step in a life well lived.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Tom Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, February 6, 2021, one hour prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Michael Nall, Jonathan Nall, Justin Harrison, Seth Harrison, Dustin Norris, Caleb Hammond, Branson Nall, and Paul Smith. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Harrison’s memory may be made to Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. The family requests attendees to please observe all standard COVID 19 protection protocols. Daddy would never want anyone to become ill on his account.
A very special thank you to the staff at Extendicare for their care and support over the years.
