1st Lieutenant Charles Richard DeVane Jr., age 90, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at The Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama following a brief illness.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Thursday, September 8, 2022, at 4:15 pm at the Clayton City Cemetery in Clayton, Alabama with Reverend Andrew Donaldson officiating and Glover Funeral Home of Clayton directing. Charles was born October 2, 1931, in Elba, Alabama to the late Charles Richard DeVane, Sr. and Hilda Maddox DeVane. In 1959 he received a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Alabama Polytechnic Institute now known as Auburn University and was a member of Sigma Nu and Tau Nu Tau fraternities. Charles was a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army and served in the United States National Guard and the Civil Air Patrol. He was a proud member of the USA Presbytery, the Masonic Lodge, the Paul Harris Society of Rotary International, a lifetime member of the Golden Eagle Auburn University Alumni Association, Army Corp of Engineers, Presbyterian Council for Chaplains and Military Personnel, Chaplain of the MS Firefighter Burn Center/Lighthouse Lodge and was an Eagle Scout. Charles had a pilot’s license and enjoyed flying, playing golf, but most of all he loved and cherished his church work as a Presbyterian Minister. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Palatka, Florida.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joe Ben DeVane.
Left to cherish his memories are two sons, John Charles DeVane of Greeneville, MS, and Thomas Richard DeVane (Nelleka) of Niceville, FL; three daughters, Carol Ritchey Bruce (Chris) of Richardson, TX, Denise DeVane White (Bryan) of Childersburg, AL, and Angela DeVane Hazel (Billy) of Lincoln, AL; sister, Penny DeVane Donaldson (Olen) of Auburn, AL, fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
