Dirk Merrill, of Dothan, passed away on September 26, 2024, at the age of 70. Born on September 7, 1954, in Opp, Alabama, Dirk's life was a testament to his love for exploration and the joy he found in the company of friends and family.

Dirk was the beloved husband of Vicki Hinson Merrill, with whom he shared 33 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. He was a devoted son to his mother, Navajo Tomberlin Bawkum, and was preceded in death by his father, Joe Harmon Merrill, and his step-father, Jim Bawkum. Dirk's legacy continues through his son, Casey Merrill, and step-sons, Justin Fisher (Chasity) and Brandt Singletary (Kirsty), and step-daughter, Bethany Fisher. His grandchildren, Jameson Fisher, Sawyer Singletary, and Sage Singletary, will forever cherish the memories and lessons imparted by their grandfather.

Dirk's siblings, Jan Grimes, Freddie Merrill, Michael Merrill, Judy Hawthorne, and Lynn Frazer, will remember him as the adventurous and friendly brother who always had a story to share. A graduate of Opp High School, Dirk furthered his education by attending Auburn University, where he balanced his studies with working on oil rigs, a testament to his strong work ethic and adventurous nature.

In his younger days, Dirk was an avid hunter and pool player, skills that he honed with precision and patience. As time went on, he discovered a love for golf, a game that allowed him to enjoy the outdoors and the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. However, it was the sky that truly called to Dirk; flying was not just a hobby but a passion that gave him a sense of freedom and exhilaration.

A Celebration of Dirk’s life will be held at 1 PM, Monday, September 30, 2024 from the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12 PM until 1 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home.
