Obituary: 1SG, US Army (Ret) Donald A. Spivey
1SG, US Army (Ret) Donald A. Spivey of Slocomb passed away Monday, June 3, 2013 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 70.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, at the First Baptist Church of Slocomb with Rev. Dan Raley, Rev. Coley M. Holloway and Rev. Addis Habbard officiating. Burial will follow, with full military honors, at 11:30 a.m. at Memory Hill Cemetery will Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory of Slocomb directing.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
1SG Spivey was born on March 13, 1943 to the late Hollie and Blanche Brannon Spivey in Geneva County Alabama. He was a proud veteran who retired from the 1204th Engineering Company of the Alabama Army National Guard after 35 years of service. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Shriners and Scottish Rite. As a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Slocomb, he served as the chairman of the Property and Maintenance Committee for 8 years. He also served on the Slocomb City Council, Slocomb Water Board and as Slocomb’s Fire Chief, he also retired from Sony/NYPRO after 25 years.
In addition to his parents, one brother, Jimmy Earl Spivey and one sister, Judy Baxley preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Linda Reardon Spivey, Slocomb; two daughters: Robin Register (Troy), Pelham and Wendy Hester (Danny), Wetumpka; five grandchildren: Reece Register (his fiancée Amber Duncan and her daughter Julia), Katy, Amber, Will and Samantha Hester; a special sister- in-law, Jo Ann Spivey, Slocomb; one brother, Bill Spivey (Joan), Dothan; two sisters: Nellie McCart, Milton, FL and Patricia Skipper (Gerald), Abbeville; several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
Jimmy Smith, Ricky Tindell, Phil Singletary, Don Heard, Jon Williams and Doyce Bolin will serve as pallbearers. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Tew Sunday school class.
