Obituary: Mr. Donald B. Wilson
Mr. Donald B. Wilson of Hartford passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 85.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Hartford Methodist Church with Rev. Alex Oberneder and Rev. Dric Williford officiating. Interment will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.
The family will receive friends at the church from 3:00 p.m. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Wilson’s honor to the Hartford Methodist Church or Hartford Public Library.
Mr. Wilson was born February 19, 1938 in Maryville, TN to the late Fred and Maymie Owens Wilson. Donald was a graduate of Carson-Newman University and Syracuse University. He served honorably in the Alabama Air National Guard for 28 years in the 115th Air Control Squadron, where he served as Weapons Controller, Operations Officer, and Unit Commander. He retired after 32 years as a civilian employee with the Finance and Accounting Office at Ft. Rucker. Donald had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was an avid reader and loved a good book. Donald was a loving husband, adoring father and grandfather and will be deeply missed.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Mary Anna King; son-in-law, Dewayne Waters; and granddaughter, Skylar Waters all preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jo Ann Murphy-Smith Wilson, children: Joy W. Waters, Jill W. Hughes (Mark), and Tracy Wilson (Patti); grandchildren: Josh Wilson, Amanda Wilson (Chris), Justina Sampson (Kyle), Wesley Hughes (Maggi), Kailey Gilley, Parker Hughes, and Jade Waters; great grandchildren: Canter Graham, Rhett Graham, Talmadge Hughes, Layton Bentley and Oak Bentley; sister, Joyce Thomas; several nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the entire team at Southern Care Hospice for their love and care.
