Mr. Edward Sherling, Jr. of Enterprise, Alabama died January 30, 2013 after a long illness.


 


Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Rob West and Rev. Gary Daniel officiating.  Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing.  The family will receive friends from 4:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Friday, February 1st at the funeral home. The family asks that donations be directed to the Organ Restoration Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Main St., Enterprise, AL 36330.


 


                    Ed Sherling was a native of Enterprise, Alabama.  He graduated from high School at Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama and attended college there his freshman year.  He then transferred to Auburn where he spent his sophomore year.  He volunteered for the draft in 1954 to qualify for the GI bill and after Basic Training attended OCS at Ft Sill, Oklahoma.  After being commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, he attended the Jump School at Ft. Benning, Georgia and the Jumpmaster Course at the same facility and was selected as Aide-De-Camp to the Deputy Commanding General.


 


After his discharge from the Army, he attended the University of Alabama and while there was offered a job with General Motors in Atlanta.  While working full time for GM, he finished his education at Georgia State University in Atlanta.  After several years with Chevrolet Motor Division Regional Office in Atlanta, he decided that he wanted to own a dealership and left GM to train with the premier dealer in Atlanta.  He advanced in the ranks as salesman, new car sales manager and ultimately general manager for several dealerships in Atlanta.  In 1975, the opportunity presented itself to purchase and operate the established Ford Dealership in his native hometown of Enterprise, Alabama.  He owned and operated Ed Sherling Ford ever since.


 


Mr. Sherling was an active member and past president of the Enterprise Rotary Club, Chairman of the Administrative Board  of Enterprise First United Methodist church, Board Chairman of the Ford Dealer Advertising Association for the Atlanta Region, former member and Chairman of the state of Alabama Ethics Commission, member of the Governor’s Crime Commission, past president of the Alabama Dealer’s Association (2 terms), past president of the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce (2 terms), board member of PACT-Alabama Preapproved College Tuition, and a member of AUSA-Association of US Army.


 


He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Madge Sherling and brother John Sherling.


 


He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Kirkland Sherling, sons Ed Sherling (Stephanie) of Atlanta, Paul Sherling (Heidi) of Enterprise, special niece Cindy Haisten (Herby) of Troy and daughter Chelsea, 4 grandchildren, Daniel and Catherine of Atlanta and Mary Elizabeth and Braxton of Enterprise, brother George Sherling (Lou Ann) of Birmingham, and several nephews and one niece.


 


The Sherling family would like to extend special thanks to Shag Laprade and the team of outstanding caretakers who cared for him at Enterprise Nursing Home, as well as Drs. Monty Peden and Rick Harrelson and the nursing staff of Enterprise Medical Center, who provided outstanding and compassionate care.
