George Bennett Ward age 83 of Dothan, Al went on to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Noland Hospital.


 


George was born on February 2, 1934 in Hartford, AL to the late Jefferson Hillman and Kate Gassett Ward. He graduated high school at Geneva County High School in Hartford, AL in 1953 and attended Napier Field Tech School (Wallace College). He then married the love of his life, Maebelle on June 6, 1954 at Hartford Baptist Church, Hartford, AL., and on July 16, 1955 their precious daughter, Janie Beth was born.


 


George worked various jobs, retiring from Hutchings Food Brokerage Co. (China Doll), in 1996, worked as a greeter from 1996 until 2007, and was Santa for several years. He recently drove for Mercedes, Hyundai, Mazda, and Toyota. He coached Ridgecrest Little League for several years and was an active member of Ridgecrest since 1958, teaching Sunday School and Training Union for the three year olds, and fourth and fifth grades. He also served as a Trustee, he served on several committees, and sung in the Adult Choir for many years. Recent church activities were singing with the Saints, Forever Young Exercise Class, Prime Time, and a member of Alton Cantrell’s Sunday School Class.


 


He is preceded in death by his parents, infant baby brother, sisters and brothers, Laura Lee King (Shelly), Agnes Mae VanLandingham (Q.L.) Howard Claxton Ward (Bonnie), James Hillman Ward (Hazel), Catherine Maloy (J.T.), Sarah Margaret Henderson (Buddy), and nephew, Samuel Eugene Loftin “Sonny”.


 


Surviving relatives include his wife, Maebelle of 62 years, daughter, Janie Beth Taylor and son-in-law Danny, and grandson, Aaron Bennett Taylor, brother, David C. Ward (Mary Charles), and many nieces and nephews.


 


Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Pastor Ray Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.


 


The family will receive friends at Ridgecrest Baptist Church from 1 to 2 P.M. Saturday, April 15, 2017, one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church Building Fund, 1231 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL 36301.


 


Pallbearers will include the nephews, Doug Ward, Mike Loftin, Pat Loftin, Billy Joe Creel, Rob Ward and Levi Tate. Honorary pallbearers will be Alton Cantrell’s Sunday School Class, and 1953 High School Class.
