Gerald “Jerry” Arthur Ballard, 81, of Dothan, Al., peacefully passed away on August 22, 2022, after a long battle with dementia.
Born in Whitney Point, NY, to Arthur and Uadia Ballard, Jerry was the second of nine wonderful children. He attended and graduated from Whitney Point Central High School and was a veteran of the Air Force. He spent his working life as a heavy equipment operator for various companies but ultimately retired from Broome County as a landfill supervisor. Jerry was a founding member of the Whitney Point Sportsman’s Club, where he loved to hunt, shoot trap, and play poker. He was a passionate hunting and fishing enthusiast and didn’t let a hunting season pass him by. One of his greatest loves was traveling to Colorado yearly elk hunting with Bob Colton, Cecil Card, and his sons. He spent most of his retirement fishing for salmon on Lake Ontario and sea trout in the Florida waters of the Gulf Coast.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Arthur, mother, Uadia, and brother, Robert. He leaves behind his wife, Marjory, three children, Steven (Diedre), Kelli (Stacey) McAllister, and Duane, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He also leaves his remaining siblings, Joan (Al) Keller, Barbara (Richard) James, David (Joyce), Kathy Barrow, Terri Burlingame, Nancy (Bill) Bledsoe, Paul (Sherry), and sister-in-law, Pat.
A remembrance of life service will be held on September 11, 2022, at 3:00 pm at the Whitney Point Sportsmen’s Club. The family will receive friends starting at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be made to the Whitney Point Sportsmen’s Club Scholarship Fund P.O. Box 634, Whitney Point, NY 13862.
