Obituary: Mr. Henry Francis Fortune
Henry F. “Bill” Fortune of Slocomb born March 27, 1938 passed away August 10, 2019 at Southeast Health in Dothan.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2019 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday one hour prior to service time.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be given to The Wounded Warriors Foundation.
Mr. Fortune is preceded in death by two children: Donnie Smith and Charlene Trokey both of Slocomb, AL. His father and mother, Henry and Lucille Fortune; two brothers: Leroy and Virgil and wife Wanda Fortune all of Slocomb, AL.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Audrey Bradshaw Fortune; two children: Janet and husband Clifton “Cowboy” Eslava; Slocomb, AL and James “Jimmy” and wife Debbie Smith; Hickory, NC; four grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; as well several nieces and nephews that loved him dearly.
Bill served 35 years in the United States Army where he retired as a Master Sergeant; during his time of service he was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, Meritorious Unit Citation (2 Awards), Aircraft Crewman Badge, Republic of Gallantry Cross w/Palm/Good Conduct Medal (6 Awards), Recruiter Badge, Gold Recruiter Badge w/2 Sapp Stars, Recruiter Badge w/3 Gold Stars, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Driver Badge w/Bar. Bill was a very active member of the community in Slocomb. He has been awarded Man of the Year for his efforts to make his community strong, he was a current member of the Water board, and he was instrumental in redeveloping the VFW in Slocomb several years ago and served as the Commander and Chief of the local VFW for several years. He was an active member of the Planning and Zone board, the Slocomb Area Business and Community Association, as well as the owner of several local businesses in the town of Slocomb.
