It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Homer Spooner, Sr., of Cottonwood, Al who departed this life on September 1, 2024, at the age of 84. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Homer lived a life of laughter, dedication, and warmth that touched all who knew him.

Born October 15, 1939, in Miller County, Homer was a proud graduate of Miller County High School before attending Texas Tech University. He eventually returned to Colquitt where his lifelong commitment to agriculture defined much of his career. His work on the family farm, along with his agriculture consulting in Argentina, was a testament to his dedication and love for the land.

Homer was deeply cherished by his beloved wife, Sheila, with whom he shared many years of love and companionship. He was a devoted father to his three sons, William “Bill” Homer Spooner, Jr., Scott Kelley Spooner (Leigh), and Timothy Eric Spooner (Melanie). He took great pride in his role as a grandfather to his seven grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.

He is survived by his sister, Sara Carr of Brooks County, and will be fondly remembered by many extended family and friends. Homer was predeceased by his father, Victor Z. Spooner, his mother, Mattie Ruth Powell Spooner, his sister Jean Vistart, and his brother Victor Spooner.

Homer’s legacy is one of humor, strength, and unwavering commitment to his family and his work. His work ethic was well known, and he continued farming, building, and many projects into his 80’s.  He respected those who served our country and spent many hours handcrafting and maintaining over 300 crosses for fallen heroes. Homer, along with his wife and volunteers, placed the crosses along the roadside in Cottonwood, Alabama on several holidays each year. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his presence will be deeply missed.

A memorial service to celebrate Homer’s life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Cottonwood, AL on September 7 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

May he rest in peace, knowing the profound impact he made on those around him.
