Mr. Howard Shelton McCallister, 89, husband to his sweetheart of seventy years, Edna Ruth McCallister, went Home to be with his Lord and Savior, Friday, June 20, 2014 at his residence. He was a loving husband, father and PaPa to his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014 at Bethel Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Ricky Plummer and Reverend Wallace Russell officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Southern Heritage Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time Monday at Bethel Baptist Church and at other times at the family residence.
Born in Houston County, Alabama, Howard was a son of the late James Curtis and Elizabeth Mae Cobb McCallister. He was employed with American General Life Insurance Company as an agent for twenty years and won many awards for his salesmanship. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WW II as a surgical technician. He is a lifelong member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a trustee, deacon, and a Sunday School Director for twelve years.
Surviving is his wife of seventy years Edna Ruth McCallister; a son & daughter-in-law, Lawrence (Mona) McCallister; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sue (Wayne) Hodges, Savannah, GA., Janie (Richard) Williamson, Donna (Kent) Skinner, Sandy (Joey) Arroyo; a sister, Dot Womack, Ashford, AL; thirteen grandchildren, Charese Schmetz, Wynne Nance, Casey Williamson, Colby Williamson, Caleb Williamson, Chris McCallister, Anthony McCallister, Kala Friedrich, Keesha Tyler, Kole Skinner, Hannah Bruner, Seth Arroyo, Shelton Arroyo; twenty six great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; special friends and caregivers, Evelyn Bryant, Jamie Womack and other special attendants.
Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 3257 S. Cottonwood Road, Dothan, AL 36301.
