After battling an extended illness for the last couple of years, our loving dad and husband, I. D. Griffin, left this earth on June 7, 2017, and walked into the hands of his Savior.  Our mother, Lila Jean Griffin was by his side as she had been for 60 years.  Both of his children, David Griffin (Linda) and Rhonda Hice (Richard) were honored to call him daddy.   His granddaughters, Gracie Adams (Dan) and Lacie Hayden (Spencer) have great memories of Papa I.D. teaching them fun things such as how to drive and play checkers—always showing much patience.  He enjoyed watching his grandsons, Jackson, Parker and Graham playing ball and teaching them about hog hunting.  He also had the joy of loving his six great-grandchildren—Griffin, Annabelle, Samuel, Penelope, Brodie and Luca.

As the son of Lula and Walter Griffin, he was born on April 6, 1935, and raised on the Alabama/Florida line in Holmes County, Florida.  He is preceded in death by four brothers—J. W., Averette, Rex and Walter, Jr. and two sisters—Esther Mae Hand and Drew.  He is survived by two sisters—Mary Bell Nadeau and Betty Sue Ellis (Alf).

In his early years, I. D. was an entrepreneur and retired from the water well business.  He followed in his dad’s footsteps and joined the brotherhood of Masons.  He was recognized for his 50 years of faithful service.  He and Lila Jean enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves, fishing, camping and following the Alabama Crimson Tide.

I.D. was loved by many generations.  He was a man of few words, but the words that he spoke were certainly words of wisdom.  He was truly an icon in his community.

Visitation is planned for Saturday, June 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home in Geneva, Alabama, with services following at 11:30 a.m.  Graveside service will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
