James David Mathison, 52, of Dothan, Alabama, was born on April 26, 1962 in Enid, Oklahoma and passed on May 30, 2014 in his Dothan home. James was loved by many and will be dearly missed by his children, family and friends. Known as Daddy, Jim and Jamie, he was filled with zeal for life and the quest for adventure.
Celebration of Life for Jim will be held at 3 PM Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established for his children.
A resident of Dothan since youth, Jim attended Houston Academy where he played center for the Raiders football team and worked on the newspaper staff. He furthered his education at Auburn University, earning his Bachelor of Science in Construction Operations Management in 1990. At Auburn, he was a brother of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and served as Fire Marshall for the chapter. It was in the loveliest village on the plains where Jim met Dee McCown, his future wife and mother of his children.
Shortly after graduation, Jim took a position with McDonnell Douglas (later Boeing), which took him and Dee to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where they lived and worked until 2001. Serving as a liaison between McDonnell Douglas/Boeing and the Royal Saudi Air Force, Jim oversaw the construction and management of major airbase facilities in support of the F-15 Peace Sun Program.
Jim adored sailing and travel, both domestic and international. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Boy Scouts’ Order of the Arrow, Altar boy and lifelong member of The Church of the Nativity in Dothan.
Jim is survived by his son, Foster David Mathison, daughter, Meagan Mashael Mathison and former wife, Dee McCown Mathison of Overland Park, Kansas; his mother, Jacqueline Jobes Mathison, of Dothan, Alabama; his sister, Rebecca Mathison Barnette of Olney, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his father, Solomon David Mathison in 2001.
