James Franklin Huckaby ”Buddy”, a resident of Gordon, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 79.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2012 in Clearman Chapel at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Dr. Sammy Prim officiating. Burial will follow in Gordon Cemetery with Southern Heritage Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home.
Flowers will be accepted or Memorial contributions may be made to Gordon Baptist Church, 855 Greenfrog Road, Pansey, AL, 36370 or to American Cancer Society, 134 Quarrles Court, Ozark, Al. 36360.
Buddy was born December 17, 1932, a son of the late Alvin Huckaby and Pearl Jeffcoat Huckaby. He was born and reared in Gordon, Al. Buddy was a 1951 graduate of Ashford High School. Following graduation, he served in the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic.
Buddy married his wife, Jean, in 1954. Together, they raised one daughter and started a business. Buddy and Jean founded Huckaby’s Super Service, now known as Huckaby Oil Company, on November 1, 1958. They have run a successful family business for the past 53 years.
When not at the store, Buddy enjoyed fixing and building things in his shop. He also loved the outdoors; “hobby farming” on his 135 Massey Ferguson Tractor and fishing at Bazemore Mill Pond. He was also an avid cat lover.
He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Buddy was also a member of the Ashford Masonic Lodge, Shriners International, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and American Legion Post 55.
Surviving are his devoted wife of fifty seven years, Jean Ham Huckaby, Gordon; a daughter Loretta Koen and husband Ronnie, Gordon; two grandchildren, Jason Koen, Auburn, Ginny Koen Miller and husband Bryn, Gordon; a sister Marjorie Lane and husband Kenneth, Dothan; a nephew Greg Lane and wife Linda, Panama City, FL; three nieces.
Buddy will forever be remembered by his loving family, many friends and countless customers.
Serving as pallbearers are will be Ronnie Koen, Nathan Worsham, Jamie Jeffcoat, Tommy Womack, Bobby Snellgrove and Larry Smith.
