James Travis Mixon, a resident of Madrid, AL, passed away at the age of 99. He was born on November 27, 1924, to Wester and Inez Norris Mixon.
James Travis proudly served in the Marine Corps during World War II from 1943 – 1946 in the Asiatic - Pacific area. He participated in the campaigns of Bougainville, Northern Solomons, Guam, and Iwo Jima. After the war, James Travis returned to the Madrid area and married Olbia Brackin. He then began a lifelong career in farming. He cultivated cotton, peanuts, and soybeans and was recognized for his outstanding achievements in agriculture, notably being awarded membership in the Alabama One – Ton Peanut Club in 1962 for a record addition to crops, he raised chickens, pigs, and cows and was known for having the first pig – parlor in the area.
James Travis had many hobbies throughout his life. In his earlier years he enjoyed bird hunting and field trials and remained an active member of the Wiregrass Gun Dog Club. He won numerous awards, trophies, and prizes, with his most prized dog being Old Danny Boy. In his later years, he enjoyed fishing with friends and family.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 70 years, Olbia Brackin Mixon; brothers, Bennie Joe, Gene, and Willie martin Mixon; and sister, Lou Neil Garrard; half-brother, Wester, Jr. and half-sisters, Catherine Grace and Mary Frances Harris.
He is survived by a son, Tony (Anita) Mixon; daughters, Susan (Max) Tyson and Elizabeth Rich, all of the Madrid Community; brother-in-law, Athol (Gloria) Brackin, Enterprise, AL; sisters-in-law, Melba Bradford and Gloria Brackin, Dothan, AL and Mary Brackin, California; grandchildren, Blake Mixon, Erin Hayes, Charlotte (Jimmy) Keen, Steven Hayes, and Mary Ashley (Trent) Ford; great-grandchildren, Payton and Ella Grace Keen, Grayson Hayes, Hayden and Ava Ford; step-grandchildren, Melissa Tyson, Sherry Bullard, Angel (Will) Reigelspreger, and Ty Tyson; and numerous step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Madrid Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jayson Kirk officiating. Burial will follow immediately in the church cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Serving as pallbearers will be Blake Mixon, Steven Hayes, Jerry Mixon, Kevin Brannon, Jimmy Keen, and Ty Tyson.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Olbia Mixon Memorial Scholarship for Exemplary Christian Character at Madrid Baptist Church, 764 Decatur Road Lot C3, Cottonwood, AL, 36320.
