Jim Scales, born 22 August 1941, died at 79 years young peacefully in his home on 22 October 2020 surrounded by his loving family and grandchildren.


Jim was a kind and loving man who always made time for his family. He lived a full life and spent the majority of his younger years in the United States Navy in the Submarine and Undersea Warfare Force. He was a plank owner onboard the USS SAM RAYBURN (SSBN-635), and also served with distinction as the 23rd Pilot while assigned to the Bathyscaph Deep Submergence Vehicle-1 (DSV-1) TRIESTE II, where he explored the ocean floor at depths exceeding 12,500 feet below sea level. During his military service he married the love of his life, Mrs. Shirley Anne Lesesne, on 21 June 1969. After retiring from the Unites States Navy in 1980, Jim joined the Southern Company at Farley Nuclear Power Plant, where he worked in the nuclear power field until his retirement. Jim and Shirley remained devoted to each other for 51 years and used their love to build a lifetime filled with family and kindness. 


Jim will be welcomed in Heaven by his parents, Homer and Thelma Chappell-Scales; brother, Delmas Scales and sister, Flonell Guyton.


He is survived by his wife, Shirley Lesesne Scales; daughter, Shea Collins; son, Sloan Scales and daughter in law, Jennifer Cassanelli Scales; sister in law, Joyce Scales; four grandchildren, Sage Scales, Mackenzie Collins, Isaac Scales, and Annabell Collins, along with extended family.
