Mr. John Benjamin Berry of Dothan passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at the age of 54.
Graveside services will be held at 3 P.M. Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at Memory Hill Cemetery with Reverend Tom Chestnut officiating and Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 3 P.M. Wednesday, one hour prior to the service.
Ben was born November 2, 1966 in Geneva, Alabama, and spent most of his life in the Geneva County area.
He married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth, on April 29th, 1988. Together they raised their only son, Johnathan. Ben started his career in law enforcement at the Geneva County Sheriffs department in 1991, where he served the Geneva County area until 2008 as a deputy. His career continued in Hartford, Alabama as police chief until 2015 when he retired. He took great pride in his 24 years of service and he valued his son’s decision to follow in his footsteps.
Outside of work, some of Ben’s passions were collecting old cars and police badges. He spent many Sunday’s in the nursery at Sardis Church keeping all of his babies. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his best friend and grandson, Jay.
Ben is preceded in death by his father, John Earl Berry; his brother, John David Berry; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Ida Helms; his maternal grandparents, Lee and Vera Yeomans.
Ben is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Berry (Dothan); son, Johnathan Berry (Dothan); mother Donnie Berry (Dothan); grandson Jay Berry (Dothan); his best friend and brother of many years, David Helms; and several special people he considered his children and grandchildren-Ashley Cook, Abbey Koogler, Adrianna Smith, Mackenzie Yarbrough, Laney Dorriety, Emmie Cotton, Truitt Cotton, Porter Miller, Mary Michael Miller, Hank Miller, and Anna James Miller; Ben also leaves behind several special nieces and nephews-Brooke Hasty, Ashley Burks, Justin Johnson, Chris Metcalf, and Skyler Berry.
