Mr. John “Buck” McGowan, Jr. of the New Hope, FL community passed away at Flowers Hospital on December 25, 2011. He was 81. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 in the chapel of Pittman Funeral Home in Geneva with Rev. Curt McCollough and Rev. Mahlon LeCroix officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah Anna Baptist Church Cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Beulah Anna Baptist Church, 1363 Coursey Road, Westville, FL 32464 or to your favorite charity.
Mr. McGowan was born in Holmes County, FL on February 2, 1930 to the late John Posie and Willie Bell Dady McGowan. John served his country in the US Army. In June 1957, he married Loretta Galloway. Later that same year, he began his 35 year career with the State of Florida Department of Transportation. He held various positions in several locations, including Marianna, FL.
He and Loretta have resided in Holmes County for the past 30 years. He was a member of the Beulah Anna Baptist Church. He was well-known in the community as a cattleman and farmer. He enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Terry McGowan; brother, Cliffton Frank McGowan; and a sister, Lucy McGowan Miles.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Loretta Galloway McGowan of Westville, FL; two daughters, Pam (Mike) Messer of Sugar Hill, GA and Maryl (Curt) McCollough of Meigs, GA; three grandchildren, Jeff (Megan) Messer of Troy, AL, Lindsey McCollough and Dylan McCollough, both of Meigs, GA; three sisters, Eunice Wiggins of Westville, FL, Elsie (Ken) Muellar of Waukesha, WI and Willene (Jess) Holmes of Milton, FL; beloved brother, Bill (Louise) McGowan of Esto, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
