John R. Williams, a resident of Dothan, went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, November 28, 2011 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He was 64.


Celebration of Life services for John will be held at 11 AM Friday, December 2, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Park Chapel with Reverend Bill Smith officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 PM until 8 PM Thursday, December 1, 2011 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to: the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32556.


John was born in Alma, Georgia on December 17, 1946. He graduated from Baxley Georgia High School and the University of Georgia School of Journalism. John was a US Navy Seal and he served two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he received numerous medals and honors.


John worked for 32 years as a television anchorman in the southeast area. The majority of his news career was spent at WTVY in Dothan, AL. After retiring from news, he became an agent for AFLAC where he found great joy in helping others in their time of need.


He held a private pilot’s license, and was skilled in the martial arts where he held multiple black belts in various styles. John was also a member of the Navy boxing team and his favorite hobbies were photography and scuba diving. He was a 32 degree Mason.


He is preceded in death by his parents, Merle Stone and Roscoe Williams. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Williams, his twin daughters, Tawny W. Carlisle, Tracy W. Thomas, and his son, Patrick Williams, as well as their spouses. John was blessed with two wonderful grandchildren, Garrett and Hannah. He is also survived by his sister, Lynda W. Lanham, and his brother, Gary Williams.


Above all John loved Jesus, his family and friends, his country and of course, the Georgia Bulldogs. He will be greatly missed. Go Dawgs!
