Joseph F. (Joe) Dykes died May 5, 2012, at his home in Dothan. He was 84.
Mr. Dykes was born October 21, 1927, in Bullock County, AL. He served in the US Army in 1946-1947, and graduated from Auburn University in 1950, with a degree in Agricultural Science.
Mr. Dykes’ lengthy career with Bob’s Feed Mills brought him to Dothan in 1957. After retirement from Bob’s Feeds, he began a new career at Miles Ford Tractor, now Northside New Holland, until his 2nd retirement in 2002. He has been a member of Cloverdale United Methodist Church since 1958, serving in many capacities including Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Board, Trustee, Chairman of the Building Committee and teacher of the Jack Roney Sunday School Class for 30 years. He was also active in civic activities. Mr. Dykes was the Chairman of the Dothan City Planning Commission for many years, and involved with the Dothan Chamber of Commerce as well as many agricultural organizations. He was the recipient of the Allen M. Mathews Award in 1977, a member of the Auburn University Alumni Association, a charter life member of the Auburn Agricultural Alumni Association, and an avid War Eagle fan.
Known as “Uncle Joe,” Mr. Dykes was a familiar voice across the Wiregrass Area due to his many years of broadcasting the Old Taylormade Opry radio show.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday, May 10, 2012, at the Cloverdale United Methodist Church in Dothan with Reverends Al Harbour and Mark Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.
Visitation will be held at the church Thursday, May 10, 2012, from 10 to 11 A.M., one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Dykes was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Susie Mae Dykes, a brother, G.M. Dykes, and a sister, Julia Dykes Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary W. Dykes, daughters, Mary Jo Dykes (Thomas Howard) of Lincoln, NE; Patricia D. Tooley, Silver Springs, FL; grandson, James C. Watson, Jr (Lisa), Soddy Daisy, TN; granddaughters, Jessica P. Lechner (Robert), Auburn, NE; Amy L. Tooley, Silver Springs, FL; great-granddaughters, Brooke M. Watson and Lily A. Watson, Soddy Daisy, TN; Aubrey R. Lechner, Auburn, NE; sister, Margaret Dykes Baker, Dalton, GA.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Gentiva Hospice, Gail Monk, and friends Jim and Kay Hassell for their love and attention to Papa during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Cloverdale United Methodist Church Building Fund.
